"Hale Konon" Native American memorial sculpture HPS
Installed 2015
"Hale Konon" (translation: Tule canoe) is a public art sculpture, commissioned by the San Francisco Redevelopment agency as a part of the Hunters Point Shipyard redevelopment project. This sculpture is a memorial to the Native American Ohlone and Muwekma tribes that once lived along the estuaries and bays in San Francisco. "Tule" is native marsh grass which grows along the waterways and was used extensively for the building of canoes, dwellings, watertight baskets and many useful items. When the canoes were used for several years and became deteriorated, they were then returned back into the water where the tule grows, giving valuable nutrients to the grasses and fish. This piece was installed spring 2015.
